I think standards of attractiveness for women differ by country and culture. What body types and features are popular also seem to depend on the region and on individual values.

I haven’t been there myself, but in places like the U.S. and Europe, a healthy body type is often valued, and being excessively thin is not especially favored. Rather, a moderately muscular, flexible, and healthy figure is seen as attractive.

A friend of mine who works as a gym instructor said that in recent years, the body positivity movement has spread, and people have become more accepting of diverse views on body shape.

Efforts to reduce prejudice against being overweight have also been made, and apparently some models and celebrities now have fuller figures.

But in Japan, especially among women, there seems to be a belief that slim, neat-looking, petite women are more popular. Perhaps influenced by the recent Korean wave, many women are working hard every day on extreme dieting and waist-shaping, even wearing corsets at a young age. It really is a lot of effort.

I can’t help thinking that men don’t actually demand that much. These days, the world is full of talk about appearance and lookism. Since I’m from the Showa era, I want to say loudly that what matters is the inside. Men don’t just enter a social contract called marriage because a woman seems a little plain but has a warm, motherly presence and seems comfortable to hold.

When I ask the men around me, they say that beauty and a slim figure are certainly preferable, but if they can choose, they’d rather have someone with a fuller, softer body. There are many men who laugh crudely about that.
